Doreen Lawrence stands by claims that racism played a factor in Grenfell response
SUMMARY:
- Doreen Lawrence states that 'more would have been done' if the Grenfell tower block had been 'full of white people'
AUDIENCE APPEAL:
- The article speaks about how race still plays a vital role in government response despite perhaps national beliefs. This would appeal to the working class, Black readers of The Voice since it covers a story surrounding working class people. Although the fire brigade denounced her claims- It is an opinion piece that reflects the thoughts and feelings of Black Britons.
COMMENT:
- I think that this piece touches on an almost untouchable aspect of tragedy- What would have happened if they were higher class? What would've happened if they were white? These are undoubtedly questions overlooked by the mainstream media however The Voice's obligation to provide insight on Black Experience in the Uk, and Gilroy's ideas surrounding the dynamic 'other' and the UK's depiction of Black People allows this article to be read from a different perspective.
