Learner's Response: OSP Assessment

Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

  • WWW: Very well structured answers, emphasising theory and issues/debates very effectively
  • EBI: Reference to industries in Q1: Google as a major conglomerate
  • EBI: Consideration of the production values/context in 'The Voice'
Identify five specific aspects from Figure 1 (the Google Home advert) that you could have mentioned in your answer (e.g. selection of image, framing and focus, colour, text etc.)

  • The connotations of 'home' in conjunction with Google as a major conglomerate
  • The minimalist aesthetic - modern
  • The framing of the advert- the family out of focus, the paint and the google home not out of place
  • reinforces the White, Middle Class, Western family dynamic
  • Colour Scheme
Now use the mark scheme to identify three potential points that you could have made in your essay for Question 2 (Hesmondhalgh - narrow range of values and ideologies).

  •  Production values of The Voice - How they contrast Teen Vogue
  •  Reference contrasting content between Teen Vogue and the Voice
  •  The industry wide commercialisation of culture and how this plays into Hesmondhalgh's theory
Use your exam response, the mark scheme and any other resources you wish to use to write a detailed essay plan for Question 2. Make sure you are planning at least five well-developed paragraphs in addition to an introduction and conclusion.

  •  Intro: The Voice - Narrow Views, Low success rates/Teen Vogue - 'Radical' but rather mainstream ideas, commercial success
  • Teen Vogue - 'Radical' in America, Political BUT Traditional online magazine, discusses taboo issues however generates high traffic and has commercialised activism some would argue, this reinforces Hesmondhalgh but also acts as an argument against since it reinforces hegemonic views and stereotypes to eliminate risk [failed as a print magazine]. McRobbie, Medhurst, Shirky
  • The Voice - subverts British hegemonic views, offers surveillance, has an extremely niche audience with videos generating only a few hundred watches [compared to millions on Teen Vogue] and has a low production value despite the representation they're providing, evidences Hesmondhalgh and offers the reality of subverting a conglomerate run industry. Gilroy, Hall
  • Industries - Independent V. Conglomerate, Art v. Commerce, Surveillance v. Story- Hesmondhalgh's statement covers an industry wide issue. Conde Nast and Gleaner are widely different, also the monetisation of content and advertising plays a huge part
  • Conclusion - The Voice shows that there's a wide range of ideologies perpetuated in the industry however this is mainly by niche publications as mainstream publications sch as Teen Vogue utilise the zeitgeist and popular politics as well as American hegemonic ideologies to ensure commercial success.
Finally, identify three key areas you plan to revise from the OSP unit (CSP aspects or theories) having looked at your feedback from this assessment.

  • Key Examples from the texts
  • Comparing industries [Conglomerates vs. Independent]
  • Interlinking my context into my point for the questions- WHAT context is relevant? Why are certain facts needed?
