Why are we still explaining blackface in 2019?

SUMMARY:

•  This article summarises the implications of Blackface and how the history and impact is still having significant impacts in today's society. Many politicians and public figures, such as Canadian President Justin Trudeau have been exposed for using blackface and the article explores why this is still happening in 2019.

AUDIENCE APPEAL:

•  This article offers surveillance, as it offers an op-ed and education on the issue. The article is also very topical and socially relevant today, as racist connotations within pop culture are being heavily explored and people are now being held accountable for commodifying black culture, something this article talks about and holds people accountable for. This also links to Gilroy's idea of 'Black Diaspora'  and how black experience and mediated black experience differ, however since this is a Black owned magazine, the content and ideologies presented perhaps closely mirror the actual experiences and thought of the audience members. 

COMMENT ON STORY:

• I think that this story has a clear comment on Black culture, as well as progressive values. It speaks on important issues- and issues that are impacting a largely Black audience.  This story also comments on how government figures have to be trialled as mebers of the public and held accountable for their racially insensitive actions and ignorant posts from their past.
