The Voice #4

University of Bristol appoints new black history professor to explore its relationship with the slave trade

SUMMARY:

  • This article covers the first Black female history professor at the University of Bristol, to help the university understand it's role in the past.

AUDIENCE APPEAL:

  • This article offers Personal Identity, with young Black females recognising the potential in their futures. This also links with Gilroy's ideas of the Black Atlantic, with the professors focus being on reconnecting Black Bristol students, as well as the University itself with it''s roots, particularly it's role in slavery.

COMMENT:

  • This article reinforces The Voice's role in providing a voice for Black Afro-Caribbean Brits. It also links in with Gilroy's ideas surrounding the importance of Slavery in constructing contemporary Black Identity. This shows a progressive state for the educational system, that has mostly underrepresented Black history within the education system.
